Ross Bleckner

(* 1949 New York City)
The very important contemporary American artist was born in New York on May 12, 1949. From 1971 to 1973 he studied with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close at New York University and at the California Institute of the Arts with a Master's degree. Bleckner had his first solo exhibition in 1975. In 1995 the Guggenheim Museum in New York dedicated a mid-career retrospective to his work. Works by the internationally renowned artist can be found in institutional and private collections all over the world, including the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Collezione Maramotti (Italy), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Spain), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York).
Ross Bleckner has been investigating the interface between psychology, biology and personal identity through painting for forty years. The results range from geometric abstraction to space suggested by fog-shaped fields or stripes, from painterly constellation systems and architecture to explicitly symbolic works in which urns, chandeliers, birds, flowers, blood or brain cells were used. Its main subjects often float in space and are surrounded by diffuse backgrounds. The challenges he faces as an artist, as well as society in general, are investigated and addressed. On the other hand, he presents the human longing for beauty, expressed, for example, in flower motifs. Series of works such as Dome and Architecture of the Sky, which appear for the first time in his works of the 1990s, are continued and further developed. These compositions correlate with the unrecognisable, in search of understanding and cognition. The artist Ross Bleckner articulates his ideas, thoughts and artistic visions through his individual painting technique and painting itself. The process is elementary and multi-layered. The materials are a composition of oil in combination with zinc, wax or powdered metal particles. The aim is to influence the thought process and the perception of the viewer and his reception.
