Early Viennese modernism had a lasting influence on avant-garde Austrian artists from the postwar period to the present day. Among the pioneering achievements of fin de siècle artists, most notably Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele, was their radical and intense exploration of the human body and the multiple dimensions of physical and psychological experience. Unfettered by the conventions of their time, they examined the elemental phases of life, such as pregnancy, birth, and death, but also and the physical manifestations of mental illness, as well as the broad spectrum of sexual desire.

These achievements of the artists of Viennese Modernism are revisited in the 1960s and 1970s. The artists of Viennese Actionism, among them especially Günter Brus, Arnulf Rainer and Otto Muehl, understand this body-centered art of Viennese Modernism as its precursor. With their sometimes shocking performances, the Viennese Actionists certainly represent one of the most radical avant-garde movements in contemporary art. Their actions attracted international attention and strongly influenced the performances of artists such as Valie Export and Marina Abramovic.

At FRIEZE MASTERS 2021 we will show selected works of Classical Modernism and Viennese Actionism. A special focus this year will be the works of Günter Brus and Franz West.
