Jakob Gasteiger

(* 1953 Salzburg)
Jakob Gasteiger lives and works in Vienna and Weinviertel. As a representative of Analytical Painting he is one of the most important Austrian painters. In his works he deals with the transitions between graphics, painting and sculpture.
Jakob Gasteiger graduated in 1974 from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg. He won the Faistauer Prize for Painting in 1990. Monochrome works are a major part in Gasteiger's OEvre. With a certain spatula he forms relief-like structures on the paintings. The spatula becomes his tool, which he uses in an almost mechanical process without any iconographic claim. He consistently explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture, using in addition to (neon) paint, aluminium, glass and other materials. "It's about the process, the painting, the color, all the components that make up a picture-object, and at the same time they are the content," says Jakob Gasteiger. In 2019 Jakob Gasteiger receives the Grand Decoration of Honour of the land of Lower Austria. His works can be found in numerous public collections such as Albertina Vienna, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Kunstforum Wien, Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Museum Liaunig, Museum Angerlehner, Lentos Museum, Sammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbank Wien, Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, and many more.
