Picasso was inspired by Ludovic Halévy's narrative story `Monsieur et Madame Cardinal`. It is about a young bourgeoise girl whose parents arranged for her to marry a rich elderly bald man. Before the wedding she starts an affair with a young good-for-nothing and provokes a scandal.
