Alfred Kubin
We are very pleased to be able to present an Alfred Kubin exhibition in Vienna in spring 2022. In our gallery we present almost 40 works by the artist, from early ink drawings and preparatory sketches for his print works to book illustrations and paintings.

It is extremely rare for an artistic personality to unite so many contradictions in himself and his own work as in the case of Alfred Kubin: on the one hand, living in absolute seclusion, yet on the other hand, internationally networked in a far-reaching correspondence and extensive exhibition and publication activities throughout his lifetime. On the one hand, he was involved in the activities of the "Blaue Reiter", on the other hand, he did not fit in at all with "classical modernism".
Peter Assmann

As a draughtsman, graphic artist, illustrator and author, Alfred Kubin is one of the most important representatives of Expressionism and Symbolism. Kubin is a master of fantastic beings and horrifying creatures, which he stages in a unique way. His pictorial works are never only cruel or only humorous, only grotesque or ironic. They always combine the most diverse aspects of associative motifs. In our exhibition we give a small insight into the artist's contradictory and fascinating oeuvre - from his famous and sensational early work, through the fantastic and dreamlike dimensions of the 1910s, to selected illustrations such as those for the novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" by Oliver Goldsmith.

"The right viewer, as I wish him to be, would not only look at my sheets with enjoyment or criticism, but, as if stimulated by secret touch, his attention would also have to turn to the picture-rich darkroom of his own dreamy consciousness."
Quote from Alfred Kubin during an exhibition opening in 1927
