Under the title ‘Klimt to West’, the W&K – Wienerroither & Kohlbacher Gallery is exhibiting selected works from its own collection. This group exhibition brings together works from Viennese Modernism with examples of post-war and contemporary art.
A central thread running through the exhibition is the multifaceted exploration of the human body, psychological states and social taboos – themes that have had a lasting impact on the international perception of Austrian art. The spectrum ranges from early drawings by Gustav Klimt, still in the academic style, and expressive depictions by Egon Schiele, through to Arnulf Rainer’s physical overpaintings, and on to Franz West’s sculptural forms and spatial references. This juxtaposition offers an insight into the continuities and breaks in the artistic approach to the figure, self-perception and material over more than a century.
