Max Weiler is one of the great representatives of Austrian painting in the second half of the 20th century, who attracted international attention early on. His creative oeuvre spans a period of around 70 years. The late 1950s represent an important period in Weiler's artistic work, which was to lead him to a first high point of abstraction, in the cycle "Als alle Dinge" (1960-61). His deep connection between the experience of nature and spirituality is the starting point for the development of a gestural-expressive to meditative-abstract painting. These are paintings in which the small and close abruptly changes into an optic of distance. Nature undergoes a metamorphosis. The marriage of creator and creature, who are in love with each other, was just as exemplary for Weiler as his endeavour, after the downfall of the Bund-Neuland ideals, to establish a new foundation for his own work through precise observation of man and nature.
